License Class Guide

Chinese Driver License Classes Explained: C1, C2, C6 and Motorcycles

Chinese driver licenses use vehicle-class codes rather than plain-language labels. For most foreigners converting an overseas license, choosing the right class is the difference between a smooth application and a counter rejection. The most common categories are C1 for small manual or automatic cars, C2 for automatic cars only, C6 for light trailers, and D/E/F for motorcycles.

Quick class comparison

China class Typical vehicle Who usually needs it
C1 Small manual or automatic car Most car drivers converting a standard overseas license
C2 Small automatic car only Drivers whose overseas license is automatic-only, or who only plan to drive automatics
C5 Small automatic passenger car for disabled drivers Applicants who meet the medical and vehicle-adaptation conditions
C6 Light towing trailer Drivers who need to tow a caravan or light trailer behind a passenger vehicle
D Three-wheeled motorcycle Motorcycle riders needing the broadest motorcycle class
E Two-wheeled motorcycle Riders of ordinary motorcycles
F Light motorcycle or moped Riders of lower-powered motorcycle categories
A/B classes Buses, trucks, and large commercial vehicles Professional drivers; extra exams and eligibility checks usually apply

For ordinary private driving, C1 or C2 is usually the key decision. Do not assume a car license automatically covers motorcycles, trailers, or commercial vehicles.

C1 vs. C2: the most common choice

C1 is the broad small-car category and generally covers both manual and automatic small passenger cars. C2 is narrower and applies to automatic small cars only.

Question C1 C2
Can drive manual cars? Yes No
Can drive automatic cars? Yes Yes
Best for Drivers who may rent or buy either manual or automatic cars Drivers who only need automatics
Conversion concern Your overseas license should not be restricted to automatic-only if you request C1 A safer match when your home license is automatic-only

If your overseas license has an automatic-only restriction, staff may refuse to issue C1 and ask you to apply for C2 instead. The Chinese translation should clearly state any restriction so the counter can map the class correctly.

Does a car license cover motorcycles?

No. A car class such as C1 or C2 does not authorize motorcycle riding in China. Motorcycle categories are separate and are usually shown as D, E, or F.

  • D is commonly treated as the broadest motorcycle class because it covers ordinary three-wheeled motorcycles.
  • E covers ordinary two-wheeled motorcycles.
  • F covers light motorcycles or mopeds.
  • If your overseas license has both car and motorcycle entitlements, the translation should show both clearly.

Local practice can be strict. If your home license uses endorsements instead of separate classes, make sure the Chinese translation explains those endorsements in vehicle-class terms.

What about C6 trailers?

C6 was added for light towing trailers and is useful for caravans, camper trailers, and other light trailer combinations. It is not automatically included just because you hold a C1 or C2 license.

  • Expect staff to check whether your overseas license specifically allows towing.
  • If you only need ordinary car driving in China, you probably do not need C6.
  • If you plan to tow, confirm local VAO requirements before translating and applying.

How overseas license categories are mapped

Vehicle Administration Office staff compare your original overseas license, the certified Chinese translation, and the Chinese class you request. The translation should make the class mapping easy to verify.

  • Vehicle class or endorsement exactly as printed on the overseas license.
  • Any automatic-only, motorcycle, trailer, learner, provisional, or commercial restriction.
  • Issue and expiry dates for each relevant class if they differ.
  • Issuing authority and license number.
  • Name spelling matching your passport.

Do not hide restrictions to request a broader Chinese class. If the office discovers a mismatch, the application can be rejected and you may need a corrected translation.

Which class should foreigners request?

Your situation Likely class to discuss with the VAO
Standard car license with manual entitlement C1
Automatic-only car license C2
Car plus motorcycle entitlement C1 or C2 plus D/E/F, depending on the motorcycle entitlement
Car license with trailer or towing entitlement C1 or C2 plus C6, if accepted locally
Truck, bus, or commercial vehicle license A/B class review; expect extra exams and stricter eligibility

Keep every document consistent

Local offices can interpret the rules differently, so treat your paperwork as a consistency exercise. Keep your passport spelling, license spelling, translation wording, and application forms aligned before you reach the counter.

Frequently asked questions

Is C1 better than C2 in China?

C1 is broader because it covers both manual and automatic small cars. C2 is enough if you only drive automatic cars, and it may be the correct match if your overseas license is automatic-only.

Can I ride a motorcycle with a Chinese C1 license?

No. C1 is a small-car class. Motorcycle riding requires a motorcycle class such as D, E, or F.

Can foreigners convert trailer entitlement to C6?

Possibly, but it depends on your overseas license wording and local VAO practice. Confirm before applying and make sure the translation clearly states the towing entitlement.
