Translation Guide
Convert a UK Driver License to a Chinese License
If you hold a valid UK driver's license, you may use it as the basis for a Chinese license conversion or temporary permit application. The key is presenting a readable, verified, and consistently translated document package.
Eligibility
A valid, unexpired UK license is the foundation of your application. Chinese authorities check the license category, validity period, and your stay status.
- Your license must be a full license — learner, provisional, or temporary permits are not accepted.
- Entry/exit records may be checked to confirm you held the license through ordinary means.
- A residence permit of 3 months or longer is required for a full conversion.
- Short-stay visitors (under 1 year) apply for a temporary permit instead.
What your translation must show
A certified Chinese translation must clearly display the following:
- Your full name (matching your passport exactly).
- License number.
- Issue date and expiry date.
- Name of the issuing authority.
- Vehicle class and any endorsements or restrictions.
A proper certification stamp and company credentials reduce the risk of rejection at the counter. Some offices require a physical stamped copy — confirm local requirements before ordering.
Application pathway
| Stay type | Path | Test required? |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term visitor (under 1 year) | Temporary driving permit | No — brief road-safety briefing only |
| Long-term resident (3+ months) | Full Chinese license conversion | Yes — Subject One theory test (100 questions, 90/100 to pass, English available) |
Common reasons for rejection
Most applications fail for avoidable reasons. Check each item before your appointment:
- Expired license.
- License category does not match the Chinese vehicle class applied for.
- Name differs across passport, translation, and application form.
- Missing or expired accommodation registration.
- Translation lacks a certification stamp or company details.
- Medical report is older than 6 months or from an unapproved clinic.
Keep every document consistent
Local offices can interpret the rules differently, so treat your paperwork as a consistency exercise. Keep your passport spelling, license spelling, translation wording, and application forms aligned before you reach the counter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my UK license directly in China?
No. Mainland China does not recognize foreign licenses or IDPs for ordinary road driving. You need a Chinese temporary permit or a full Chinese driver's license.
Is a certified translation enough to drive?
No. The translation supports your permit or conversion application — it does not itself authorize you to drive.
How long does the full conversion take?
Document preparation plus test scheduling typically takes 1–4 weeks. A temporary permit can be issued the same day.
Need a certified translation?
Submit the front and back of your driver's license. We review your documents and send payment instructions before preparing the certified PDF.
